4th Place

Year: 2012

Location: Gowanus, Brooklyn

Collaborators: Phillip Baumann Architects

The green roof of a two-story Gowanus home supports native plantings inspired by one of the owner’s favorite upstate hiking spots.

With soil a foot deep, the generous planting bed encourages the growth of larger native grasses and shrubs, simulating a meadow habitat and encouraging invertebrate production, as well as insect and pollinator activity. The highest point of the NYC subway system is visible on the horizon just above the garden.
