A sleek, wet-laid patio of granite tiles welcomes you out into a playful family garden where the clean geometry of large, stepping-stone pavers set in ornamental gravel is juxtaposed against a wild and textured planting — a mix of ornamental trees, shrubs, and perennials. Focal points include a mature specimen cornus kousa, two species of itea virginica (‘Little Henry’ & ‘Henry’s Garnet’) both of which turn flaming red in fall, clusters of herbaceous nepeta ‘Walkers Low’ (catmint) and magenta-flowering monarda (bee balm) and assorted edibles, including vaccinium (blueberry) and prunus persica (peach).
At the back, a full-width raised bed hosts a colonnade of carpinus caroliniana (american hornbeam), providing both privacy and a limey backdrop along an ipe fence. With clusters of yellow-glazed ceramic pots and teal furniture in the foreground, the garden is bright and colorful all year round.
