Brooklyn Made
Year: 2021
Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Scope: project management, site preparation, planters, planting
Diverse and layered plantings, in a variety of large beds, planters, and pots both new and repurposed, define the many public and private rooftop spaces of the performance venue’s unique building – from the pool deck and terraces for visiting artists, to outdoor bar and lounge areas for concert attendees, to the entryway and marquee awning.
Rescued and retained trees, shrubs, and perennials from the space’s original plantings find new homes, redistributed among many additions.
The marquee awning is home to a colorful mix of ornamental grasses, Rhus typhina (Sumac), retained Hosta (Plantain Lily), Nepeta (Catmint), and pink flowering Sedum ‘Autumn Joy' (Stonecrop), together with Hedera Helix (English Ivy) vines and Juniperis procumbens (Creeping Juniper) that peek over the front edge and grow through the Brooklyn Made sign.
At the box office, a dramatic curtain of English Ivy spills from an upper terrace, creating a playful, jungle vibe as you enter the main venue space.
The pool deck transports you, giving the impression of a tropical climate with Yucca and palmy-looking Rhus typhina in glazed pots, while the adjacent lounge areas, bar terrace, and upper residential terraces serve a wilder, more meadowy look.
Throughout those spaces, beds, large pots, and custom planters support a dense mix of trees, bushy evergreens, flowering and fragrant shrubs, grasses and an assortment of unique perennials both familiar and unfamiliar.
